The Tokyo Olympics are just around the corner, and there are a lot of new sports that are being introduced this year. Some of the sports that are new to the Olympics are baseball, karate, skateboarding, and surfing. With the introduction of these new sports, the Tokyo Olympics are sure to be a great event.
New Sports
The Tokyo Olympics will feature 33 sports — four more than the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games — with a record 339 events, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Wednesday.
Three of the new sports for Tokyo 2020 are official IOC disciplines: baseball/softball, karate and skateboarding. The fourth is surfing, which will make its Olympic debut as a demonstration sport in Tokyo before becoming an official discipline at the 2024 Paris Games.
The 33 sports on the program for Tokyo 2020 represent a 19% increase in event programming compared to Rio 2016, with 10,500 athletes set to take part in the Games, IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell said at a media conference in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Number of New Sports
The Tokyo Olympics will see the addition of five new sports to the lineup, bringing the total number of sports at the Games to 33. The new sports are baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing. These sports were chosen in an effort to appeal to a younger audience and add more excitement to the Olympics.
Tokyo Paralympics
Tokyo will be hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics from July 24 to August 9, 2020. Tokyo was also the host of the 1964 Summer Olympics, making it the first city in Asia to host the Summer Olympics twice. The city was then selected to host the 2020 Summer Olympics at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires on September 7, 2013.
New Sports
The Tokyo Olympics will see the debut of five new sports – baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing – as the IOC looks to attract a younger audience. The inclusion of these sports follows a trend of the IOC adding more “urban” and “extreme” sports to the Olympics in order to appeal to a younger demographic.
In addition to the five new sports, there will also be several new events within existing sports. For example, in athletics there will be events for men’s and women’s 1500m T54 (wheelchair racing), while in swimming there will be mixed gender 4x100m medley and 4x100m freestyle relay events.
With the addition of these new events, a total of 33 different sports will be contested at the Tokyo Olympics.
