The Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors are an American professional basketball team based in Oakland, California. The Warriors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Warriors have won six NBA championships, reaching the NBA Finals four times in a row from 2015 to 2018.
The Houston Rockets
The Houston Rockets are the 2018 Sportsperson of the Year, as selected by the editors of Sports Illustrated. The Rockets were honored for their extraordinary season, in which they won a franchise-record 65 games and reached the Western Conference Finals.
The Sportsperson of the Year award is given annually to “the athlete or team whose performance that year most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement.” Previous winners include LeBron James, Serena Williams, and Muhammad Ali.
The Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers were selected as the 2018 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year. The award is given annually to the team or individual whose achievements and contributions “transcend sports.”
The Dodgers were chosen for their resiliency in the face of adversity, bouncing back from a disappointing end to the 2017 season to win their seventh consecutive National League West title. They also made it all the way to the World Series, ultimately losing to the Boston Red Sox in seven games.
Despite coming up just short of their ultimate goal, the Dodgers’ 2018 season was nothing short of extraordinary, and they are more than deserving of this prestigious honor.
The Minnesota Lynx
The Minnesota Lynx are a professional basketball team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, playing in the Western Conference in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The team was founded before the 1999 season. The team is owned by Glen Taylor, who also owns the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Lynx play their home games at Target Center, their home since 1999.
Since their establishment, the Lynx have qualified for eleven WNBA postseasons and won four WNBA Championships (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017), all under head coach Cheryl Reeve. The franchise has been home to many high-profile players such as Katie Smith, Seimone Augustus, Maya Moore, Rebekkah Brunson and Lindsay Whalen.
The New England Patriots
On December 10, 2018, the New England Patriots were named the 2018 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year. The award is given annually to “the athlete or team whose performance that year most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement.”
