Writing a sports report can be both fun and informative. A sports report typically includes information on the game or event, a description of the players and/or teams, and some commentary on the performance. You can write a sports report in just four simple steps.

The Who, What, When, Where and Why of the Event

In every sport, there are always winners and losers. But, in order to write a sports report, you first need the basic information about the game. This includes the who, what, when, where and why of the event. You can find this information by looking at the back of a sports card or visiting a team’s website.

1. Start with the basics: who won, who lost and the final score.
2. Give some essential details about the game, such as when it took place, where it was played and how long it lasted.
3. Offer a brief description of what happened during the course of the game. Be sure to include any important plays or turning points in the contest.
4. Explain why the game was significant or why it was an exciting match-up. Did it have playoff implications? Was a record broken?

The Play-by-Play

In step one, you will want to write out the play-by-play of the game. This can be done in chronological order or you can start with the most exciting part of the game and work your way backwards. Be sure to be as detailed as possible, but try not to get bogged down in the minutiae. Your readers should feel like they are right there in the thick of things, but they don’t need a play-by-play of every single move.

The Conclusion

After the game has been analyzed and the most important details have been included in the body of the report, the conclusion should summarize the game briefly and state who won. If the game was particularly exciting or close, this can be mentioned in the conclusion as well. The final score should always be included in the sports report.
