The Early Days

Although there is evidence of sports being played as far back as the prehistoric period, the first recorded evidence dates back to around 3200 BC in ancient Egypt. A relief scene from the tomb of Djehutihotep, an Egyptian nobleman, depicts figures in a wrestling ring. This is the earliest recorded instance of wrestling being performed as a sport.

Ancient Greece

The first organized sporting events were held in ancient Greece in 776 BC, when the Olympic Games were founded. Held every four years to honor Zeus, they featured competitions in a variety of disciplines such as running, wrestling, and chariot racing. Originally, only men were allowed to participate, but later women were given their own separate games.

The ancient Greeks believed that physical activity was essential to a well-rounded education, and therefore included it as part of the curriculum for young boys. Team sports such as basketball and volleyball are thought to have originated in Greece as well.

Athletic contests also played an important role in the religious festivals of ancient cultures. The Mayan ball game known as pitz was a ritualistic sport played to honor the gods, and is thought to be the precursor to modern day soccer.

The Middle Ages

Most people think that sports started in the 19th century with the Olympics. However, sports actually started in the Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages, most people were peasants and they had to work all day. The only time they had for entertainment was after dark and on Sundays.


In England, during the Middle Ages, sports were primarily a form of entertainment for the nobility and the upper class. However, there were also some sports that were popular among the general population, such as archery and wrestling.

Archery was a popular sport among both the nobility and the general population. In fact, it was so popular that laws were enacted to ensure that all able-bodied men had access to a bow and arrows.
