A total of 33 sports are on the program for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. This is three more than at Rio 2016, and equals the record number of sports on the program from London 2012. In Tokyo, a new sport makes its Olympic debut: skateboarding, while baseball/softball and karate return after having last been staged at Beijing 2008.

Every edition of the Summer Olympic Games must feature a minimum of 14 core sports, with baseball/softball, basketball, canoeing, boxing, cycling, fencing, field hockey, football, gymnastics (artistic and rhythmic), handball, judo, rowing, rugby union7 ( rugby sevens), sailing , shooting , swimming , table tennis , taekwondo , tennis , track &field athletics , volleyball and wrestling all currently falling into this category.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) can include up to a further 10 sports in the Summer Olympics program as ‘additional’ or ‘optional’ sports at its discretion. The host country may also petition to have a specific sport included in the program to help boost local popularity and ticket sales . For Tokyo 2020 these additional sports are BMX freestyle cycling , karate , roller speed skating , skateboarding and sport climbing . Surfing was also initially selected for Tokyo 2020 but was subsequently dropped due to issues with the proposed venue .
