Monthly Cost
Root Sports is a regional sports network that carries coverage of professional and collegiate sports events in the Root Sports Southwest, Pittsburgh, and Rocky Mountain areas. The network is owned by the MLB Network and Dish Network, and it launched on April 1, 2011.
AT&T U-verse- $7
AT&T U-verse offers Root Sports for just $7 per month with their U450 package or above. You can also get Root Sports as part of the Sports & News package for $10 per month.
Comcast Xfinity- $9
Comcast Xfinity offers the Root Sports channels in their Sports Entertainment Package for $9/month. The SEP also includes NFL RedZone, Golf Channel, NBC Sports Network, and more.
You can add Root Sports to any Xfinity TV package for an additional $4/month, which is a great deal if you’re already an Xfinity customer.
If you’re not an Xfinity customer, you can get the Root Sports channels as part of AT&T U-verse TV’s U450 package for $180/month. U-verse’s U450 package also includes HD service and a whole bunch of other channels that sports fans are sure to love.
DirecTV- $10
Root Sports is a regional sports network that is owned and operated by DirecTV. The network offers a variety of programming that is focused on the teams that are located in the Northwest United States. The network is available on a monthly basis for $10.
Dish Network- $9
Root Sports is a regional sports network owned by the AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh LLC subsidiary of AT&T Inc., which operated as a joint venture between the Sinclair Broadcast Group (which provided programming and held a controlling 80% interest) and DirecTV Sports Networks (which held the remaining 20% interest). It was the flagship affiliate of Fox Sports Networks until 2019, when that network was replaced by Sinclair-owned Bally Sports Pittsburgh.
The channel broadcasts coverage of collegiate, minor league, and professional sporting events in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Root Sports Pittsburgh airs 125 live sporting events each year covering Major League Baseball as the official television home of the Pittsburgh Pirates; NHL hockey as the exclusive local broadcaster of more than 40 regular season Pittsburgh Penguins games; Major League Soccer with select live matches featuring the Columbus Crew SC; college football and college basketball including live game telecasts from every Pitt Panthers home game; other local teams such as The XFL Lucky Dragon’s Football Team and Highmark Monarchs Semi-Pro Football Club.

Comcast Xfinity- $108
Comcast Xfinity offers Root Sports Southwest as part of their Sports Entertainment Package, which starts at $108/year. In addition to Root Sports, the package includes NFL RedZone, NHL Network, NBA TV, and MLB Network.
DirecTV- $120
DirecTV offers Root Sports Pittsburgh as part of its sports package, which costs an additional $5.99 per month. This means that the total cost of Root Sports Pittsburgh with DirecTV is $120 per year.
Dish Network- $108
Dish Network currently offers Root Sports Pittsburgh in HD as part of its America’s Top 200 package for $108 per year. This price is only available for new customers and is subject to change.
Add-Ons
There are various Root Sports packages depending on the provider. AT&T U-verse, DIRECTV, and Dish Network all offer Root Sports. AT&T offers two Root Sports packages. The first package costs $5 per month and the second package costs $10 per month. DIRECTV offers two Root Sports packages as well. The first package costs $4 per month and the second package costs $13 per month.
AT&T U-verse- $5-$15
Sports packages from AT&T U-verse vary in price depending on the channels that are included. The Sports Tier package costs $5 per month and includes channels like ESPNEWS, Fox Soccer Plus, GolTV, and NBC Sports Network. The Max channel package costs $15 per month and contains all of the channels in the Sports Tier package as well as ESPNU, FS1, FS2, NBA TV, and NHL Network. There are also a number of individual channel packages that can be added on to a standard AT&T U-verse TV package for an additional monthly fee.
Comcast Xfinity- $4-$10
Comcast Xfinity offers Root Sports as an add-on to their programming packages. The price of the add-on depends on the programming package you have. The packages that include Root Sports range from $4-$10 per month.
DirecTV- $5-$10
DirecTV offers Root Sports as part of two of its channel packages, and the price varies depending on which channels you want.
The DirecTV Choice package includes more than 185 channels and costs $45 per month for 12 months with a two-year contract. This package also includes a free three-month trial of HBO, Showtime, Starz and Cinemax.
The DirecTV Select Package includes 140 channels and costs $35 per month for 12 months with a two-year contract. If you want HD programming, there is an additional $10 monthly fee.
Dish Network- $5-$10
Dish Network offers Root Sports as part of their “America’s Top 120+” and “America’s Top 200” packages for an additional $5-$10 per month, depending on the package.
