History

The New York Islanders are a professional ice hockey team based in the New York metropolitan area. They compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The team plays its home games at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Islanders are one of three NHL franchises in the New York metropolitan area, along with the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers, and one of only two Eastern Conference teams located in Greater New York, with the Philadelphia Flyers being the other.

The team was founded in 1972 as part of the NHL’s plans to keep a franchise from rival league World Hockey Association (WHA), and began play in October 1972. They won four consecutive Stanley Cup championships between 1980 and 1983, led by hall of famers such as Mike Bossy, Bryan Trottier and Denis Potvin, making them dynastic while setting several regular season records along the way. Shortly after an unsuccessful appeal to save their 1982–83 season from a move to Kansas City, Missouri, they were sold to real estate developer Howard Milstein who intended to move them there. However, Milstein’s attempts to secure funding for a new arena at Belmont Park were unsuccessful and he defaulted on his loan payments, leading to foreclosure by Cablevision’s James Dolan. The franchise was then awarded to London-based asset management firm Robertruntime Entertainment by an NHL-appointed bankruptcy trustee. After failing to find local investors willing to purchase a controlling interest in the team, John Pickett owner of food service company ovide Puckett’s bought a controlling interest for $10 million. His bid was approved by the courts on September 23, 1992 over several competing bids including one by Dolan who remained interested in purchasing the team himself. The new ownership group decided that they wanted to keep their team on Long Island rather than move it elsewhere. They then reached an agreement with George Steinbrenner who owned Yankee Stadium which allowed them to play there rent free for 20 years provided that they made improvements for hockey at least equivalent value of $40 million over that period starting with refurbishments necessary when they began playing there prior to their 1993–94 season; this agreement had a term of 25 years beginning after their lease at Nassau Coliseum expired ten years later following their 2004–05 NHL lockout-shortened season and ending with their 20th anniversary playing there following their 2023–24 season but was not without its critics given how much money Steinbrenner had received from taxpayer dollars during his decades owning Yankees as well as concerns about how much Steinbrenner would be able to extract from future owners given how he benefited from this deal relative other owners who did not have similar arrangements with publicly funded stadiums housing their teams particularly during periods when those stadiums underwent significant renovations that required public financing such as occurred with Yankee Stadium between 2002 and 2009 following which it reopened .

The Islanders have made nine appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals, winning five times – in 1980, 1981 , 1982 , 1983 ,and 1984 – all against the opposing Western Conference playoff champion Edmonton Oilers each time led by Wayne Gretzky;they are tied WilliamAccepted’ Boston Bruins for second most Stanley Cup wins by an American-based NHL team behind only the Detroit Red Wings who have won 11 times .

Notable Players

Some of the most notable players in the history of the New York Islanders include:

-Mike Bossy: A Hall of Fame inductee, Bossy is considered one of the best goal scorers in NHL history. He played for the Islanders from 1977 to 1987, and was a key member of their Stanley Cup winning teams in 1980, 1981, and 1982.

-Bryan Trottier: Also a Hall of Famer, Trottier is one of the greatest playmakers of all time. He played for the Islanders from 1975 to 1990, and was a key member of their Stanley Cup winning teams in 1980, 1981, and 1982.

-Billy Smith: A goaltender, Smith was a key member of the Islanders’ “ironmen” defense that led them to four consecutive Stanley Cup titles from 1980 to 1983. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993.
