What Division Sports Is Northeastern?

NCAA

Northeastern competes as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level in 18 varsity sports. The Huskies have been a member of the NCAA since the 1937-38 season, when they competed in Division II. Northeastern joined Division I in 1973 as a charter member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).

The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, also known and branded as NCAA March Madness, is a single-elimination tournament played each spring in the United States, currently featuring 68 college basketball teams from the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), to determine the national championship. The tournament was created in 1939 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and was the idea of Ohio State University coach Harold Olsen. Played mostly during March, it has become one of the most famous annual sporting events in the United States.

Northeastern State University is a Division II school competing in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The university sponsors 12 men’s sports teams and 10 women’s sports teams. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, rodeo, soccer, tennis and track & field; while women’s sports include basketball, cross country, golf, rodeo, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field and volleyball.

Northeastern competes in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Huskies sponsor 23 athletic teams, most of which compete in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The six teams that do not compete in the CAA include men’s and women’s hockey, which compete in Hockey East, and rifle, which competes as an independent. Northeastern has won 18 CAA championships and 2 Hockey East championships since joining the conference in 2005.

ACHA

Northeastern University’s ACHA team is a division 3 team that competes in the Northeast Collegiate Hockey League (NECHL). The team is made up of students from all over the world who come to Northeastern to study and play hockey. The ACHA team has been very successful in recent years, winning the NECHL championship in 2017 and 2018.
