Introduction
The Summer Olympics, also known as the Games of the Olympiad, are a major international multi-sport event normally held once every four years. The games are overseen by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC determines which sports should be included in the Olympics. The Summer Olympics have included 35 sports disciplines and more than 400 events.
The Winter Olympics
The Winter Olympics are an international multi-sport event that is held every four years for sports practiced on snow and ice. The first Winter Olympics were held in 1924 in Chamonix, France, and since then they have been held every four years with the exception of 1940 and 1944, which were cancelled due to the outbreak of World War II. The 2021 Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing, China from February 4-20.
There are a total of 15 sports that will be contested at the 2021 Winter Olympics: alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ices hockey, luge, nordic combined, short track speed skating, skeleton, ski jumping, snowboarding, and speed skating. A total of 102 medals will be awarded (with 50 being gold medals).
Alpine Skiing – This sport involves racing down a slope on skis while making tight Turns. There are five alpine skiing events: slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom (or “Super-G”), downhill (a single run race), and combined (one run each of downhill and either slalom or giant slalom).
Biathlon – This sport combines cross-country skiing with rifle shooting. There are seven biathlon events: sprint (7.5 kilometers for men / 6 kilometers for women), pursuit (10 kilometers for men / 8 kilometers for women), individaul (15 kilometers for men / 12.5 kilometers for women), mass start (12.5 kilometers for men / 10 kilometers for women), relay 4 x 7.5 kilometers), mixed relay 4 x 6 kilometers), and team sprint 3 x 7.5 kilometers).
Bobsleigh – This is a winter sport where teams of two or four push a large sled down an iced track before hopping in and racing down the track at high speeds. There are two bobsleigh events: two-man sled and four-man sled.
Cross Country Skiing – This is a winter sport where athletes ski across flat or hilly terrain while carrying their own equipment including skis, poles ,and boots. There are four cross country skiing events: sprint freestyle (for both men and women), team sprint freestyle (two athletes per team), distance classic style (30/50 kilometers for men/women), and distance free style (15/30/50 kilometers for men/women).
Curling – Curling is a sport played on ice where players slide stones across the ice towards a target area. Players use brooms to sweep the ice in front of the stone to control its speed and direction. There are two curling events: mixed doubles and team event.
Figure Skating – Figure skating is a sport where athletes perform on ice by doing spins, jumps ,and other complicated maneuvers . There are four figure skating events: individual men’s singles ,individual women’s singles ,pair skating ,and ice dancing . Ice Hockey – Ice hockey is a contact sport played on ice between two teams of skaters using sticks to shoot a vulcanized rubber puck into their opponent’s net to score goals .There are three ice hockey events: men’s tournament ,women’s tournament ,and mixed doubles tournament . Luge – Luge is a winter sliding sport where athletes ride on small sleds down an icy track at high speeds while lying on their backs or stomachs .There are three luge events: singles ,doubles ,and team relay . Nordic Combined – Nordic combined is a winter Olympic sport that combines both cross-country skiing and ski jumping .There are three nordic combined events: individual Gundersen normal hill/10 kilometer cross-country ),individual Gundersen large hill/10 kilometer cross-country ),and team sprint normal hill/4 x 5 kilometer cross=country ). Short Track Speed Skating – Short track speed skating is an Olympic racing sport where athletes skate around an oval rink on short tracks at high speeds .There are five short track speed skating events : 500 meters ,1000 meters ,1500 meters , 3000 meters relay race (for both men’s teamsand women’s teams) ,and 5000 meters mixed gender relay race . The Summer Olympics
The 2021 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXII Olympiad, are an upcoming international multi-sport event. The games are planned to be held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. Originally scheduled for 2020, the games were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
There are currently 33 sports and 50 disciplines recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). These sports make up the bulk of Olympic competition, with additional events being added on a conditional basis since 1912. Baseball and softball were removed from the program following the 2008 Summer Olympics but will return for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
