With the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to summer 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fans around the world are wondering which sports will be contested at the rescheduled event.
A total of 33 sports are on the programme for Tokyo 2020. Of these, 16 are Olympic disciplines and 17 are additional approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Cycling Mountain Bike Cycling Road Cycling Track Diving Equestrian Dressage Equestrian Eventing Equestrian Jumping Fencing Field Hockey Football Golf Gymnastics Artistic Rhythmic Trampoline Gymnastics Acrobatic aerobic Handball Judo Karate Modern Pentathlon Rowing Sailing Shooting Skateboarding Sport Climbing Surfing Table Tennis Taekwondo Tennis Triathlon Volleyball Water Polo Weightlifting Wrestling Baseball/Softball was slashed from the programme for Tokyo 2020 but was later reinstated. It will make its return to the Olympics for the first time since Beijing 2008.

Tokyo is hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics from July 24 to August 9. The event will mark the return of the Summer Olympics to Tokyo for the first time since 1964. Tokyo was originally scheduled to host the 1940 Summer Olympics, but the Games were cancelled due to the outbreak of World War II.

A total of 33 sports are on the programme for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. This represents an increase of five sports from the Rio 2016 programme.
There are 28 ‘core’ sports which must always be included in the Olympic programme, as outlined in the Olympic Charter. These are Aquatics (Diving, Swimming, Synchronised Swimming and Water Polo), Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Canoeing and Kayaking (Slalom and Sprint), Cycling (BMX Racing, Mountain Bike, Road and Track), Equestrian (Dressage, Eventing and Jumping), Fencing, Field Hockey, Football, Golf, Gymnastics (Artistic and Rhythmic), Handball, Judo, Modern Pentathlon (Shooting, Fencing & Running / Riding / Swimming), Rowing, Rugby Sevens , Sailing , Shooting , Skateboarding , Sport Climbing , Surfing , Table Tennis , Taekwondo , Tennis , Triathlon & Volleyball .
The host country may also select up to five ‘additional’ sports for inclusion in its edition of the Games – these are known as the Organising Committee’s choice or “OCOG pick”. For Tokyo 2020 these sports were Baseball / Softball , Karate , Skateboarding and Surfing .
Tokyo Olympics 2024
The Tokyo Olympics in 2024 will feature 33 sports. This is one more sport than the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The new sport for the Tokyo Olympics is baseball/softball. These two sports were last in the Summer Olympics in 2008.
