When it comes to sports, there are a lot of ways to judge which state is the best. You can look at championships, attendance, fan support, and more. However, one metric that is often used is the number of teams each state has in the major professional sports leagues.
Based on this metric, it is clear that California is the best state for professional sports teams. The state has a total of 12 teams across the four major leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL). This includes some of the most popular and successful teams in each league, such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, and San Francisco 49ers. In addition, California also has two additional MLB teams (the Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres) and two additional NBA teams (the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings).
The second-best state for professional sports teams is Texas, which has nine teams across the four major leagues. This includes two MLB teams (the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers), three NBA teams (the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, and San Antonio Spurs), three NFL teams (the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, and San Antonio Texans), and one NHL team (the Dallas Stars).
Rounding out the top three is Illinois with eight professional sports teams. This includes two MLB teams (the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox), two NBA teams (the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks), three NFL teamS (the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers，and New York Jets have played in soldier field） ,and one NHL team (the Chicago Blackhawks).
The Best States for Sports

The Worst States for Sports

Our top five states are relatively unsurprising – California, Texas, New York, Florida and Illinois. at the bottom of the list are some states that don’t have a lot of professional sports teams or major college programs – Wyoming, Vermont and Alaska. But the state that came in dead last may surprise you: Rhode Island.
The Ocean State doesn’t have any major professional sports team to call its own. The closest thing it has is the Pawtucket Red Sox, a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Boston Red Sox. And while Rhode Island does have some successful college programs – including the men’s basketball team at Providence College – it doesn’t have enough to make up for its lack of pro teams.
