Introduction

Academy Sports + Outdoors is an American sporting goods discount store chain. It has corporate offices in the Katy Distribution Center in unincorporated Waller County, Texas, United States, near Katy and west of Houston. In 2019, it operated 269 stores in 16 states throughout the Southern United States.

The company was founded in 1938 by Oscar Boswell and John Jones in San Antonio, Texas as Academy Tire Shop. It sold its first sporting goods item in 1940. It changed its name to Academy Sports + Outdoors in 2011.

History of Academy Sports

Academy Sports + Outdoors was founded in 1938 by John Rosenwald, Jr. and his brother-in-law, Max Thompson, when they opened an Army surplus store in San Antonio during the Great Depression. The pair were successful and eventually opened several other locations.

In 1963, the Academy brand was born when the name “Academy” was added to the stores. The first Academies were located in Corpus Christi, Dallas, and Houston.

The company went public in 1973 and began trading on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol “ASO.”

Academy Sports + Outdoors has been owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. since 2011.

IPO of Academy Sports

Academy Sports + Outdoors went public on October 5, 2020. The company priced its IPO at $15 per share, raising $1.6 billion in the process. Academy Sports + Outdoors is now trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “ASO.”
