What Is NBC Sports Network?

NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) is an American sports-oriented cable and satellite television network that is owned by the NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Group division of NBCUniversal. The network originally launched on July 1, 1995, as the Outdoor Life Network (OLN), which was focused primarily on programming involving fishing, hunting, outdoor adventure programs, and outdoor sports.[1][2] By 2011, OLN became widely known for its extensive coverage of the Tour de France.

NBC Sports Network Schedule

The NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) is an American English-language pay television channel that is owned by the NBC Sports Group division of NBCUniversal. It originally launched on July 1, 1995, as the Outdoor Life Network (OLN), which was focused on programming primarily involving fishing, hunting, outdoor adventure programs, and outdoor sports. By 2011, OLN became mainly a niche cable channel with only one ongoing original program that carried limited commercial interruptions; the channel began to carry overflow programming from NBC and Golf Channel during this time (with the latter of the two only carrying select programs due to space limitations). In January 2012, Comcast (which had acquired a majority stake in NBCUniversal in 2011) announced that it would relaunch OLN as part of a new group of sports networks under the group’s branding umbrella “NBC Sports Group”. As part of the relaunch, OLN shifted its focus towards serving as a television platform for Sporting News and creating original sports-related content geared towards male sports fans between 18 and 34 years old (a shift which caused the network to drop all outdoors-oriented programs shown on OLN outside of live sporting events that were still carried by the network); Comcast also dropped carriage of outdoor lifestyle programs formerly carried on VERSUS/now NBCSN in favor of pursuing carriage agreements with digital multicast networks carrying roaming package feeds of Bounce TV and Katz Broadcasting’s Katz Broadcasting–owned conflict resolution diginet Laff.

On October 2, 2017, at 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time (03:00 UTC), NBCSN expanded its programming coverage to include additional live sporting events and sports news programming on weekdays outside of its existingpacked schedule of live weekday afternoon and evening sporting events; as part of this expansion – which accompanied a rebranding effort for both NBCSN (which adopted a simplified blue-and-white wordmark logo used by other channels within NBC Sports Group) and sister cable channel Golf Channel (which switched to a wordmark logo incorporating elements from both its existing logo and that used by other channels within golf’s governing body – The R&A – since 2016) – the netlet also began simulcasting select programs seen on over-the-air sister station WNBC (which serve as fill-in broadcasts for live sporting events not carried by WNBC or any other local television station within the New York City market due to contractual obligations held by other local area broadcast and cable television outlets).

By 2011, OLN became mainly a motorsports network. On January 2, 2012, the network was rebranded as VERSUS in advance of Comcast’s merger with NBCUniversal; when the merger was completed later that month on January 28, 2012, OLN’s target audience shifted again towards general-interest sports fans who might otherwise not watch sports outside of major league baseball and NASCAR races but still hold close affinity towards some of its acquired legacy programming.

In September 2017, in advance of its relaunch as NBC Sports Network on October 2 that year (coinciding with the start of the 2017–18 NHL season), YouTube TV reached an agreement with NBCUniversal to become that network’s first official live TV streaming service distributor; YouTube TV’s carriage of NBCSN – along with those of sister cable channels Golf Channel and Olympic Channel – marks the first time that any major traditional pay television programmer has allowed any of its linear networks to be carried via an over-the-top multichannel video programming distributor.
