Modern cheerleading traces its roots back to 1869 when a University of Minnesota student named Thomas Peebles first organized a group of students to lead cheers at sporting events. Cheerleading remained mostly a male activity until the 1920s when women began to participate. In the 1930s and 1940s, cheerleading started to gain popularity as a sport in its own right and girls began forming squads that competed against other squads.

Today, cheerleading is enjoyed by girls and boys of all ages around the world. It is an important part of many sports teams and remains an integral part of American culture.
