Football
Football is the most popular sport in Germany. Over six million people in Germany play football in more than 27,000 clubs. Football has a long tradition in Germany dating back to the 19th century. The first ever national championship was held in 1903. Today, the German Football Association (DFB) is the biggest sports federation in the country with more than six million members.
The Bundesliga
The Bundesliga is the highest level of German football. The name Bundesliga is made up of the German words for “league” and “das Bundesland,” which means “federal country.” The Bundesliga is made up of 18 teams from all over Germany. Each team plays 34 games over the course of a season, with two games against each team. At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned champion.
The Bundesliga was founded in 1963 and has been going strong ever since. It is one of the most popular sports leagues in the world, with an average attendance of 45,134 per game. Football is a big part of German culture, and fans take great pride in their teams.

The DFB-Pokal
The DFB-Pokal is a German knockout football cup competition held annually. Sixty-four teams participate in the competition, including all clubs from the Bundesliga and the 2. Bundesliga. It is considered the second-most important club title in German football after the Bundesliga championship. The DFB-Pokal is run by the German Football Association (DFB).
Tennis
Tennis is a hugely popular sport in Germany and is one of the most widely-played sports in the country. The German Tennis Association (DTB) is the governing body for tennis in Germany and is responsible for organizing the German Open, one of the biggest tennis tournaments in Europe. The German Open is held annually in Hamburg and is a clay court tournament. There are also many other popular tennis tournaments held in Germany throughout the year, such as the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, which is held in Stuttgart.
The Davis Cup
The Davis Cup is an international tennis competition for men’s national teams. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. The Davis Cup began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. By 2013, 131 nations entered teams into the competition. The most successful nation has been the United States, with 32 wins from 117 finals appearances. The current champions are Croatia, who beat France in the 2018 final held in Lille, France.
The Fed Cup
The Fed Cup is the largest annual international team competition in women’s tennis, launched in 1963 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The competition was known as the Federation Cup until 1995. The Fed Cup is currently contested by an expanded field of 12 nations split into two Group A and Group B brackets of 6 nations each. Four nations qualify for the World Group each year through a series of zonal or inter-regional qualifying rounds. These Nations then compete in a home or away tie over three weekends throughout the year. The top nation from each group plays off against each other in a final to decide who will contest the Fed Cup Final, which is held at a neutral venue.
The current holders are Czech Republic who beat France 3–1 in the 2018 final. The most successful nation is United States with 18 titles, followed by Australia (7) and Czech Republic (6). France has won five titles, while Great Britain, Germany and Japan have all won two apiece. Italy and Russia have also lifted the trophy once each.
Formula One
Germany is home to some of the most popular and successful Formula One drivers and teams. Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, and Nico Rosberg are all German drivers who have had great success in Formula One. The German Grand Prix is also a popular stop on the Formula One circuit. In addition to Formula One, Germany also has a strong presence in other sports.
The German Grand Prix
The German Grand Prix is a Formula One race held at the Nürburgring circuit in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The race has been held annually since 1951 and has been a round of the Formula One World Championship since 1976. It is currently sponsored by Mercedes.
Formula One is the highest class of single-seater auto racing sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and owned by Liberty Media. The FIA Formulae include Formula 3, GP3 Series, Formula E, and Formula 2. For important races like the German Grand Prix, teams may enter up to four cars each.
Boxing
Boxing is a sport that is widely enjoyed in Germany. It has a long and storied history in the country, with some of the most famous boxers in the world hailing from Germany. The sport is also popular in other parts of Europe, and has a strong following in the United States as well.
The German Boxing Federation
The German Boxing Federation (Deutsche Boxsport-Bund e.V.) is the umbrella organization for boxing in Germany. It was founded on April 4, 1951 in Frankfurt am Main and has been a member of AIBA since 1952. In German boxing, there are currently around 12,500 licensees in 419 clubs. There are also 59 regional associations and seven state associations. Every four years, the German Boxing Championship is organized for men, women and youth. The DBV is also responsible for the German team at international championships and boxing tournaments, such as the Olympic Games, European Championships or World Championships. In addition, there are regular training camps and international tournaments for junior and senior boxers in which the DBV sends its own national team.
