Introduction
High risk sports are defined by the New York State Department of Health as any sport where the players physically come into close contact with each other, such as football, hockey, or wrestling. These sports are currently not allowed to be played in New York State due to the risk of spreading COVID-19.
The state has not released any guidance on when high risk sports can resume. However, they have said that they will be closely monitoring the situation and working with health experts to make a determination.
This is a difficult situation for many student athletes who are trying to decide whether to wait for high risk sports to resume in New York or to transfer to a school in another state where they can play their sport.
If you are a student athlete in this situation, we recommend that you speak with your coach and parents to make the best decision for you.
The Risks of High-Risk Sports
Many young athletes participate in high-risk sports such as football, hockey, and lacrosse. These sports are associated with a high risk of concussion and other injuries. The decision of when and how to return to play following a concussion is a complex one.
Cardiovascular risks
There are a few key cardiovascular risks to be aware of when participating in high-risk sports. One is sudden cardiac death, which can happen when the heart rhythm is disrupted suddenly and unexpectedly. This can be due to an underlying heart condition that was previously unknown, or it can be brought on by the physical stress of the sport itself.
Another risk is stroke, which occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. This can happen if a blood vessel is blocked by a clot, or if it ruptures due to the increased pressure from physical activity. Strokes can lead to long-term disability or even death.
High-risk sports can also put strain on the arteries and heart muscles, increasing the risk for developing high blood pressure or coronary artery disease later in life.
Infection risks
There are a number of infections that people can experience when playing high-risk sports. These include:
-MRSA
-Staph
-P Multocida
-Clostridium Difficile
-E. Coli
playing high risk sports can put you at an increased risk for these and other infections. It is important to take precautions to avoid getting sick, such as washing your hands often and avoiding sharing personal items. You should also see a doctor if you have any symptoms of an infection, such as fever, chills, or fatigue.
Other risks
Here are some other risks to take into consideration:

When Can High-Risk Sports Resume in New York?
The Empire State is home to some of the most passionate sports fans in the country. New York is also home to some of the most successful professional and collegiate sports teams. With that being said, when can high-risk sports resume in New York?
When the infection rate is low
The prevalence of COVID-19 in a region will help guide when high-risk sports can resume. Infection rates must be at or below certain levels for a minimum of two weeks before consideration for resumption. Additional considerations for all levels are noted below.
When there is a vaccine
The New York State Department of Health will allow high-risk sports to resume when there is a vaccine available for the coronavirus, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said on Tuesday.
“We are not going to have a high-risk sport until we have a vaccine,” Mr. Cuomo said during a call with reporters. “I don’t believe that’s going to be in the near future.”
When asked whether he thought a vaccine would be available in time for the start of the college basketball season in November, Mr. Cuomo said: “I hope so. I really do. But I don’t know.”
The governor was noncommittal when asked whether he would allow high school sports to resume if there was no vaccine available by the start of the school year.
“I don’t know,” he said. “Let’s see where we are then, and we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. But my inclination would be no, because you would just be putting too many people at risk unnecessarily. But again, let’s see where we are in September.”
When there are effective treatments
There is no definite answer as to when high-risk sports will be able to resume in New York, as the state will need to see a significant decrease in infection rates before allowing these activities to take place again. However, once effective treatments for COVID-19 are available, high-risk sports may be able to resume sooner than if there were no treatments available. This is because treatments would help reduce the risk of serious illness or death from COVID-19, making it less likely that someone would need to be hospitalized or die from the virus.
Conclusion
The bottom line is that there is no easy answer when it comes to when high risk sports can resume in New York. However, the good news is that there are a number of different factors that will be considered before any decisions are made. So, while it may be a while before we see high risk sports return to the state, it is definitely something that is being discussed and worked on by those in charge.
