Location

Parx Casino and Racetrack is located in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, about 20 minutes northeast of downtown Philadelphia. The casino is adjacent to the Racetrack, which offers live thoroughbred horse racing from April through December. The property also features a number of restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues.

History

In December 1959, the track was opened as Keystone Racetrack. In 1974, the track was renamed Liberty Bell Park and became the first track in Pennsylvania to offer gambling on horse races. In 1984, Liberty Bell Park was purchased by Jerry Sloan and Bob Harriford and renamed Philadelphia Park Racetrack. The new owners worked to improve the quality of racing and increase purses.

In 1994, pari-mutuel wagering on slot machine spins was introduced at the track. The following year, a second daily racing form paper devoted to Philadelphia Park was introduced. In 1996, off-track betting wagering on horse races was introduced in Philadelphia. In 1998, night simulcasting of horse races from other tracks was introduced at Philadelphia Park.

In November 2000, Greenwood Racing Inc., then-owner of Philadelphia Park, announced a 10-year agreement with Magna Entertainment Corp., owner of several racetracks in North America, which gave Magna exclusive rights to develop and operate slot machine gambling at Philadelphia Park. The Racino opened on December 18, 2002 as Pennsylvania’s first combination horse racing track and slot machine casino. It is now one of five casinos that operate under the Penn National Gaming banner in Pennsylvania.
