Root Sports Northwest is a regional sports network that is owned by AT&T Sports Networks. The channel broadcasts games of Major League Baseball’s Seattle Mariners, NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, NHL’s Vancouver Canucks and WNBA’s Seattle Storm. It is also the exclusive television home of the University of Washington Huskies. The network is available on cable providers throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska, as well as nationwide on satellite via DirecTV and Dish Network.
Root Sports Northwest is also available on DirecTV Now and YouTube TV in its markets, as well as on AT&T TV Now nationally outside of its home market.
AT&T Sports Networks (then known as Comcast Sports Group) acquired the then-Fox Sports Net-affiliated regional sports networks from Liberty Media in April 2007 (the deal that resulted in FSN’s acquisition by The Walt Disney Company was not finalized until December 14 of that year), with Root Sports Northwest launching on October 1 of that year. The channel was created through the merger of Salem-based KGW (which served as the flagship station for Fox Sports Net Northwest) and Bellevue-based KSTW (the former UPN affiliate which became a MyNetworkTV affiliate after the service launched on September 5, 2006), with KGW’s studio facilities becoming the network’s headquarters.
