Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of both tennis and badminton. It is usually played on a badminton-sized court with a tennis-like net. The game can be played as singles or doubles.
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. It is played on a court with a net similar to a tennis court, and the game is played with bats and a small perforated ball similar to a Wiffle ball. Pickleball was invented in the 1960s as a backyard game for families.
The History of Pickleball
Pickleball is a relatively new sport, having only been invented in the early 1960s. The game was created as a way to provide a fun activity for all ages and skill levels, and it has certainly accomplished that goal! Today, pickleball is enjoyed by millions of people around the world, of all ages and abilities.
So, how did this relatively unknown sport become so popular? It all started with three dads in Washington state who were looking for a summer activity that their kids (and they) could enjoy. They borrowed some elements from other existing sports, including tennis, badminton, and table tennis, and created a new game that quickly caught on with the locals.
The original Pickleball court was just 20x44 feet, smaller than a regulation tennis court. The net was also much lower, at just 36 inches high (compared to the regulation height of 60 inches for tennis). These smaller dimensions made the game much more accessible for younger players, and helped to give Pickleball its family-friendly reputation.
As Pickleball grew in popularity, some modifications were made to the court size and net height to make the game more challenging for advanced players. However, even with these changes, Pickleball remains a relatively easy sport to learn and enjoy. And that’s one of the reasons why it continues to grow in popularity each year!
Two Sports Used in Pickleball
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. The game is played on a court with a net, and the players use paddles to hit a perforated polymer ball over the net. The sport can be played indoors or outdoors, and it is a great way to get a workout.
Badminton
The game of pickleball was created in 1965 by three dads – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum – on Bainbridge Island, just a short ferry ride from Seattle. According to the story, the Pritchards had invited the Bells over for a day of backyard fun. After getting the family together, they quickly realized they had forgotten to purchase a press for making burgers. So, they improvised with Ping-Pong paddles and a lowered tennis net, and pickleball was born!
While play is similar to badminton, there are some key differences. For example, the court is smaller in pickleball (20′ x 44′) and the net is lower (34″). Plus, pickleball uses a different ball – a perforated plastic ball similar to a Wiffle Ball. Like tennis, games are played to 11 points (win by 2). However, if the score reaches 10-10, you must win by 2 points (12-10, 13-11, etc.).
Tennis
Pickleball was created in 1965 as a backyard game for children. It is now a popular sport for all ages, played with a paddle and a small, perforated ball. The game is similar to tennis, but the court and net are smaller, and the game is played with upper-body only strokes.
Pickleball can be played indoors or outdoors. The court is 20 feet by 44 feet, and the net is hung 3 feet 6 inches high at the center. The serve must be underhand and contact the paddle below the server’s waist. After the serve, players can volleying the ball back and forth until one player misses or hits the ball out of bounds.
The game is scored similar to tennis, with games to 11 points and two out of three sets. The winning team must win by two points.
