The Olympic Games are an international multi-sport event featuring both summer and winter sports. The Olympics are considered the world’s foremost sports competition, with athletes from more than 200 countries taking part.

There are a total of 33 sports on the Olympic program: 23 in the Summer Olympics and 10 in the Winter Olympics. A sport must be widely practiced by men in at least 75 countries and on four continents to be included in the Summer Olympics, and by women in at least 40 countries and on three continents to be included in the Winter Olympics.

Some of the most popular sports in the Olympics include athletics (track and field), swimming, gymnastics, cycling, basketball, and football (soccer).

Summer Olympics

The Olympic Games are an international multi-sport event occurring every four years, with the Summer and Winter Games alternating. During the Summer Games, athletes compete in a wide variety of sports, ranging from swimming and track to tennis and gymnastics. Here is a list of all the sports that are currently played in the Summer Olympics.

Winter Olympics

The winter Olympics feature a variety of sports, including alpine skiing, biathlon, Bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, luge, nordic combined, short track speed skating, skeleton, ski jumping, and speed skating.


The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will feature 33 sports — some new, some returning from past games. The International Olympic Committee approved the addition of baseball/softball, karate, sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding. These five sports were added to appeal to a younger demographic.

The IOC also approved the return of two sports that were previously in the Olympics: golf and rugby. Golf was last seen in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and rugby last appeared in the 1924 Olympics in Paris.

A total of339 events will be held during the Tokyo games. Here’s a complete list of all 33 sports that will be contested:
